Age: Given the nature of a shinigami's age, it is difficult to infer but Kaien is guessed to be just a little over 400 years old, or rather, 400 years dead.
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Appearance: To both readers of Bleach and the characters within the story, the first notable aspect of Kaien's appearance is his uncanny resemblance to the main protagonist of the story, Ichigo Kurosaki... but with a twist. Indeed, Kaien has unkempt, spikey hair but it is both black and long in the back. Like many others of the Shiba clan, Kaien has deep emerald eyes to match his raven hair and long eyelashes. Along his right arm is a tattoo of the Shiba clan symbol. This symbol is a large swirl that extends down to his forearm, ending mere inches before his wrist.
Like all shinigami, Kaien is required to wear the shihakushou, the Gotei 13 uniform. This consists of a black hakama and kimono with a white undershirt and sash. Due to Kaien's position in his division, Vice-Captain, he is required to wear an adjunct's badge. This badge is tied around the right upper arm. It is wooden, shaped like a pentagon, and displays the division's number and insignia on it. Kaien's has the number thirteen and a flower, the insignia of the Thirteenth Division.
Personality: Upon initial introduction, Kaien appears to be rough-mannered though upon looking further into is personality, the shinigami is a kind-hearted man who treats all people equally and thus expects others to do the same. Kaien is extremely expressive and constantly speaks exactly what on his mind. He is easily annoyed, though this is generally from the actions of others that conflict with his moral beliefs, such as manners and respect. Or it could simply be the crazed antics of Sentarou and Kiyone, the Thirteenth Division's third seated officers who are known for the constant bickering for attention of Kaien or the division's captain, Ukitake. This leaves Kaien well-respected in not only his division but the entire Gotei 13, though this respect is hard earned. The shinigami considers honor to have far more importance than even life. He is constantly driven by an undying determination and sheer will power. Of course all this compassion and determination does not limit him from cracking a joke now and again.
Due to the sickness of Ukitake, Kaien manages the Thirteenth Division's day to day operations. He is seen as a father or older brother figure to many, especially in the case of Rukia Kuchiki. Kaien has also been seen as a prodigy among shinigami due to his quick jump through the ranks and well-trained battle techniques.
Abilities/Weaponry: Though Kaien is a master of Kidou (Demon Arts) he, like most shinigami, prefer the use of his zanpaktou (Soul Cutter Sword) in combat. This zankpakou is known as Nejibana (Twisted Flower) and has powerful water-based abilities. Traditionally, it remains in it's unreleased form of a well-crafted but ordinary sword. Upon uttering the shikai (initial release) command "Rankle the seas and heavens!", the zanpaktou becomes a sleek, silver trident with an azure tuff of fur below the prongs. It has the ability to issue forth powerful blasts of water to overthrow any enemy.
Though he was a well accomplished, it remains untold of whether Kaien acquired the Bankai ability. Many, however, speculate that he did achieve this ability considering his previous accomplishments and the speed at which they were completed.
Weaknesses: Kaien is a man of honor, through and through. This pride is what ultimately led to his death when attempting to take revenge for his wife by challenging a powerful hollow created by Aizen Sousuke. His pride also leaves Kaien an extremely stubborn person and rarely listens to reason.
History: Kaien was the eldest of three siblings who were all members of the now diminishing Shiba clan. He grew with his sister and brother, Kuukaku and Ganju, in Rukongai and soon obtained a desire to become a shinigami which baffled the other two as neither particularly cared for shinigami which was the norm in Rukongai. Determined, Kaien entered the six-year shinigami and dazzled his instructors as he graduated in only two years. He was instantly assigned to the Thirteenth Division under captain Ukitake Jyuushiro and within five years, rose to the rank of Vice-Captain.
Within this time, Kaien met and married the beautiful third seat of his division, Miyako and was happily in love. He ran the division due to Ukitake's illness, performing the most important tasks to the most menial, such as training or helping new recruits such as Rukia Kuchiki.
Normally, in this version of Kaien, the story ends. But the fandom continues...
Disaster finally struck. One fateful day there was a report of a hollow wreaking havoc within the Soul Society. The Thirteenth Division issued one squad to solve the problem but the Hollow defeated the entire squad in a single night... including Miyako, Kaien's wife.
Swearing to take revenge upon the hollow, Ukitake, Rukia, and Kaien left in search of it. Soon enough, the Hollow was found. Immediately Kaien requested that he fight the Hollow alone, a request Ukitake requested. Rukia immediately objected but the Captain explained that rather for fighting for life, Kaien was fighting for not only the honor of his wife and the other defeated shinigami but his own honor. The Vice-Captain lasted a few minutes in combat before the hollow revealed its true abilities: to shatter the zanpaktou and then merge (not possess) the body of a shinigami. Seeing as Kaien could no longer be saved, Ukitake stepped into the battle but the Kaien-hollow soon targeted the weaker Rukia who ultimately was forced to kill both him and the hollow. Kaien apologized for bringing her into the conflict and thanked her for allowing him to "leave his heart behind". Rukia later brought the body to Kaien's siblings and Ukitake explained what had occurred to Kuukaku.
